3-MINUTE THOUGHT

A lot of luck goes into each fossil. First, there is bad luck for the subject of the fossil, then good luck with the arrival of minerals and bacteria in time to preserve it. Creatures that are already part mineral when they are alive stand the best chance of becoming fossils. For example, bones are a mineral called apatite and many plants store up silicon, both of which could lead to a place in the fossil record.
